Well in typical "Hallmark-induced holiday" fashion, it is my understanding that May 5-9 is "National Teacher Appreciation Week". As most of you regular readers know, I am a second-career teacher and have only been an educator for the last 5 years. But I must say that in this amount of time that I have called myself a "teacher", all the people I run into always heaps loads of praise on me (even more so when they find out I teach middle school). I do not know how many times I have heard from people "teachers are the most under appreciated people" but that really is not true.
Oh sure if you equate "salary" and "professional worth", then there are some definite issues. But the funny thing is that every legislator I have ever heard talk about teachers will always say just how important we are and how it is a "travesty" in what teachers make. So here is the question, since every poll ever taken lists "education" as a top priority so the public wants there to be more money for education, the politicians say they want more money for education and yet, then why does nothing ever seem to get done about it?
Well at least we have this really nifty week to give us some "warm fuzzies"...and you just cannot put a price tag on that.
